Avrem Remote Support

A Brief Overview

Congratulations! You're one step closer to being able to connect to your server from home or on the road. Before you start, let's talk a little bit about the technology you will be using to connect. The method that you will be using to connect to the server is called "Terminal Services" or the "Remote Desktop Protocol". This Microsoft-proprietary technology is built into most versions of Microsoft Windows. All we'll be doing in this tutorial is creating an easier way of accessing that technology - allowing you to skip laborious steps in the future. We'll pre-configure the settings, then save them in a file that's easy to open.

If you get stuck along the way, click the "Avrem Remote Support" button to the left and call the number listed above it for assistance.

Manual Method

You can also follow these steps to restore functionality if you've lost the remote desktop icon, or the settings have changed and you can no longer connect.

1.

We'll first need to open the Remote Desktop Client (AKA the Microsoft Terminal Services Client). You can do this several ways:

A. Hold the "Windows Key" on your keyboard and press the "R" key. This will open the "Run" dialog box (see image below). Type "MSTSC" (no quotes) in the box and hit "Enter" or click "OK".

B. Click the START button, then click All Programs > Accessories > Remote Desktop Connection.
Either of these methods should bring up a box like the one below:

2.

Click the "Options" button (circled above in red) to expand the window and give you access to more features. The image below shows what your box should now look like:

3.

Now we need to configure the settings for your server. Your box should now match the box above. You'll need to individually click each tab (circled in red above) and make sure the settings are correct. You can bounce back and forth between tabs without saving your changes - we'll save them all at once at the end.

General
--Under the "Computer" heading, make sure the IP address is listed in the box.
[CALL 330-881-5102 TO REQUEST THE IP ADDRESS]
--Username box should be blank.
--Check box for "Allow me to save credentials" should be unchecked for security reasons.
--Don't worry about the "Save" options at this time, we'll come back to those later.

Local Resources
--Under the "Local Devices and Resources" heading, make sure the check boxes are unchecked.
--Check the "Clipboard" box to allow copying and pasting between the server and your local computer.
--Click the "More" button under the same heading and make sure those boxes are all unchecked.

Programs
--All the default options should be fine, skip this tab.

Experience
--Select "Broadband" from the drop down box at the top of this section. This will allow for the best experience.

Advanced
--All the default options should be fine, skip this tab.

4.

Go back to the first tab, "General" and look for an option to "Save As" (see below). Click it, then navigate to your desktop folder on your computer and save the file there with a descriptive name.

5.

Find the file you just saved, double click it and you should connect right to the server! You can plug in your username and password to log in.
